The use of Essential Oils in Feline Urinary Syndrome : Essential Oils can be used for this purpose. The success rate is high. The problem is the syndrome is complex. There is not one cause but many. It can be related to diet and the individual cat's metabolism of the diet. It can be infectious in nature, however not as often as in the dog. Usually if there is an infection there is another problem that is at the root of it. It can be behavioral. There is a long list of things that are included here. Everything from intercat relationships, human-cat bonding, outside influences, change in environment, change in litter, change in routine, location of litter box, number of litter boxes, emotional state of the cat, death of family member including another cat, or can be idiopathic. To address these issues the cat needs to have a history, physical exam, urinanalysis, bloodwork, and xrays. In many cases the problem at the root of the abnormal urination is found right away. In some more difficult cases it takes all of the procedures. After everything is ruled out medically then behavior becomes the issue. With use of any essential oil or pheromone, it needs to be used with behavior modification. If this is not done, the alternative method is bound to fail. The essential oils used most commonly for behavior are Lavender, Peace&Calming, Trauma Life, Gentle Baby, and Orange. All are gentle oils and can be used with minimal dilution. They are generally diffused, placed on the collar of the cat, placed in the area the cat most frequents, or can be placed directly on the cat or the cat's collar.
